logo decissions

Based on last week’s discussions, plus a couple of extras that have just arrived, I’ve uploaded the final 6 choices, including the majority expressed as their favourites at the recent meeting.

To save space here, and so you can see them all on 1 page at the same time, please go to http://s520.photobucket.com/albums/w327/rhubarbradio/

There’s a few of them that are recieving a small amount of tweeks, but in a day or so, I’m sure we’ll have got down to the final choice

Then the web design, coding & layout teams can get on with their stuff, we can get the first draft of the functioning website up & running, and we can start doing radio programmes….

A sincere thank you to all that have submitted design so far, your time is appreciated more than can ever be said here.

    Hi All

I would vote for Design 4 of those shown
But I would change the “TM” to “com”
The use of TM has no legal meaning unless it is registered with the
UK Intellectual Property Office which costs £200

    Nail…..Hammer……….Hit!

Safeguarding the brand, eliminating mis-repesentation of the name, protecting the identity and all that..

    Logo 4, for the win!

design 6 is the one for me

  5. 2008 August 19

oh sorry, got my links mixed up. design 6 is the one for me :)

Don’t you think that representing a graphic eq is kind of obvious though? But then again, maybe that’s the point…

#6 is excellent. My choice to take forward into the website.

    Re the trademark:
Using ‘TM’ signifies an intention to trademark your brand, phrase etc, whereas (R) signifies an official registration. You may use whichever one is correct, making it clear to the reader that you have either applied or intend to apply for a trademark or that you already have one.

As I’m sure it’s something the radio station would consider at some point, using ‘TM’ publicly shows Rhubarb Radio’s intent to register it’s trademark.

I can’t see them as photobucket is a blocked site but will have a look later :)

I’m pleased to see this is the final selection, since these seem to have the broadest acceptance (some of the other designs polarised opinions!). Here are my thoughts on this lot in case it helps anyone make their mind up (myself included!). Or just jump to the last sentence if you want my vote.

Choosing between the related designs 4, 5 and 6 (all of which have attractive lettering, although I still have doubts about the stunted “d”), I was initially disposed to vote for 5, reasoning that yes, the EQ/level meter idea is “obvious” in that its sense will be clear to those in the know, but to everyone else it will be at worst a pretty pattern. If it’s that obvious an idea, I wonder whether other stations have used it? No examples occur to me.

The vertical alignment in design 6 suggests ceramic tiling rather than an EQ display.

The colouring-in in design 4 could hint at unity in diversity or maybe it just suggests someone doodling on a notepad whilst on the phone… Either way, it’s more lively than design 5, and more intriguing, but 5 gets the message across quicker.

Logos 2 and 3 still remind me of branding for ice cream and I still don’t know why.

Design 1 has lost none of its appeal and looks like it means business. It is however rather more staid compared to the set of designs in the top row.

So: I would be happy with designs 1, 4 or 5, but would have to choose 5 as the logo that communicates most effectively.

Definitely 5 & 6. Both designs are eye-catching and bold. The black lettering against the coloured graphic work well off each other.
These designs also don’t remind me of any other radio stations local to the West Midlands area, which is something I think had been referred to from a couple of the other designs.
They also come across as very neutral, not too masculine or feminine.

In regards to the comment posted about the E.Q. graphic being a bit obvious I am tempted to agree on this, but on the other hand I feel that with the station representing a wide variety of music and speech then something this general has to appeal to people of all cultures and backgrounds whilst not trying to be specific towards any one.

I also agree with the comment that the ‘TM’ should be changed to ‘.Com’. This way whether the logo is on the internet or on publicity like flyers & posters, it is always advertising where to find the station.

Personally I think I would go on deign 6 over 5. Though 5 is compact and fits together well, I feel 6 is the stronger image.
Even taking the wording away and just having the sideways E.Q. graphic could be an strong image for rhubarb in the future, once people have become familiar with the station and the logo.

… #4- strange how nobody’s mentioned the similar style to Billboard magazine (http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/index.jsp) – not a bad thing in my book (treading carefully), but then again, maybe I’m just TOO old !

Design one (the one we use on this website) is my favourite. The others look like they belong to a commericial radio station (in my opinion) due to typeface.

Yeah I definitely reckon 6. Number 1 (i.e. this site) is versatile, but 6 is much more eye catching. Call me cheap, but the colours really liven it up and, even if EQ is a common image, it looks great. I can imagine a really cool site coming from it. 4 is OK, but 6 is much more interesting.

I guess there would be potential to animate the EQ as well on the site which would look excellent.

Finally, ditto on changing TM to .com

I think that logo 6 would work well on a website, the EQ lends itself nicely to animation. I still prefer logo 1, closely followed by logo 6

Aaron’s generated a few more based on the comments above, and I’ve uploaded them to the url at the top of this thread.

Design 6 in purple is now the one for me.

I have to say that i do prefer the original design (on this site, mainly because the colour reminds me of the Medicine Bar logo’s and makes me think ‘custard factory’. How important that is to the listeners and the identity of the station is I do not know(?)

Secondly, the backslashes are something that i have been wanting to incorporate for the logo of our Glitch show. Overall, i feel its a nice and clean professional design.

The new logo’s are good too, but i just dont feel that they are bold enough.
