Jingles
2008 August 28
It’s been a couple of weeks since I posted an idea for a Rhubarb Radio jingle (thanks, Amy, for the reply!) but I don’t think anything else has been proposed. Since programmes are being prepared, should we not be moving ahead with this? Any thoughts?

I agree! It is not just jingles but the whole imaging of a station should be made to help the overall sound. This includes ID’s, trails for shows, beds ect. Has the target audience been decided yet?
Claire asked:
“Has the target audience been decided yet?”
Since no-one else is biting, here’s my understanding of this issue.
Ahem.
Rhubarb Radio is a community reaching out to other communities for involvement/collaboration. “Community” is meant in the wide sense of people with common interests or needs – so where things go depends to a large extent on who gets involved. However, creative industries in Birmingham (especially those involved with “popular” music) are seen as being of particular importance.
So the “target audience” would be the sort of audiences (plural) that would be interested in the same kinds of stuff… but beyond that, a young adult (plus or minus 5 years?) audience is to be especially addressed.
Definitive answers will arise as the station matures, in the light of experience, audience feedback and experimentation – so whilst I hope I will be corrected if I’ve got any of this wrong, the answers will probably change with time anyway.
Hi My name is Ben.
Amy invited me to produce some jingles for Rhubarb radio a couple of weeks ago. A five second interlude that could be reproduced in a number of different styles such as house, metal, hip hop, indie etc. -Quite a challenge! -especially as i’m the kind of musician that struggles to keep pieces within 5 minutes yet alone 5 seconds! Anyway, here is a link to a melody i am working with at the moment.

This is the basic theme, played on a piano with very little embelishment. Have been working on trying to adapt it into multiple styles, using different instruments, harmony arrangements, accompaniment, but is tending at the moment to gravitate towards jazz/jazzy house. I’m still working on it, but thought before i take it too much further, i shall present it to the rhubarb collective to get thoughts and opinions, see whether its the kind of thing you’re looking for.
Its been fun and i’ve enjoyed the process, regardless of whether my melodys actually reach the airwaves or not. Its great that Birmingham has a project which encourages creativity, user input and collaboration.
I’m not sure how something like this would sit in the music shows without seeming out of place. I can imagine it on local radio between phone in discussions but as a jingle used throughout the day across he whole station it doesn’t seem very catchy or give any information like some sort of sung strapline.
I’m sure there is some sort of rule about having to mention the name of the station so many times per hour, or is that just on normal radio?
true, there should be jingles for shows that are spoken words over tracks relating to the individual shows. when everyone gets down to recording there shows with oliver over the next weeks, i’d like everyone to record an ident for their show also then ill edit some show jingles for those shows and get permission from record labels to use them etc (shouldnt be hard as this is a radio station after all!!)
As for the tune, really what is required is a melody to be a kind of audio tag for the station which could be put at the end of each jingle – Also thats not the final version of it and it could be recorded in different styles, i think thats just an example of the melody.
